Here is my opinion. Wrestling shoes are not required, but are highly recommended. I think wrestling shoes should be required for any youth wrestler that is older than five years old. I understand that you don’t want to buy wrestling shoes for a youngster if you’re not sure if he/she will like the sport.

If your kid is a new wrestler, you don’t have to buy the best wrestling shoes. There are plenty of low cost shoes for a wrestlers.

Wrestling shoes are designed for the specific purpose of wrestling. They are light weight and designed, to bend and twist, and give your youth wrestler traction when he/she is on the mat.

Also, once a child gets older, I’m afraid they might develop a stigma because they don’t have wrestling shoes. My goal is to grow the sport of wrestling. I don’t want to see any child quit wrestling because they didn’t have a pair of wrestling shoes.

What if I Can’t Afford a New Pair of Wrestling Shoes?

Most wrestling clubs will have used wrestling shoes for this instance. In a previous article, I wrote an article that parents should donate old wrestling shoes. I have made a big push for wrestling club to get old wrestling shoes from parents so that we can grow the sport of wrestling.

In addition to this blog, I also design wrestling club websites. I have asked all of my wrestling clubs to develop a program to reuse old wrestling shoes. This way parents have access to good quality wrestling shoes. If you can’t afford a new pair of wrestling shoes, I would recommend that you contact your wrestling club. Ask them if you can buy or borrow and old pair of wrestling shoes.

Most sporting goods stores and online wrestling stores sell wrestling shoes. You can typically buy a good pair of wrestling shoes for around thirty bucks. I personally recommend World Wide Sport Supply. They have great prices and a huge selection.
